Caledonian Blue Book - Scottish National Accounts 1951-97
How does Scotland earn its way in the world, and how has its economy developed to keep pace with progress and markets around the world? This book summarises each year of Scotland's economic progress since 1951 in some 400 data series. It was published shortly before the referendum in which Scottish voters gave a resounding YES-YES to plans for a devolved administration. It follows the format of the United Kingdom National Income Blue Book, and the principles of the United Nations System of National Accounts.
Each table is accompanied by a brief statement of what it measures and why that is important. Rather less than half the statistical series had been published before and then usually in small pieces, in sometimes obscure publications, and on shifting, out-of-date, or inconsistent bases. Fifteen chapters, 64 pp, ISBN 1901 248 127
Following devolution there has been a huge step upward in the availability of official statistical data about Scotland's economy, but there are still gaps and it is difficult to put together a consistent picture. cogentSI, in conjunction with Glasgow Caledonian University and with the active support of the Scottish Executive (the devolved Government) and scotecon, an economic research network, is currently preparing a new edition of the Caledonian Blue Book, bringing the picture up to date after five years of devolution.
