Economic and social development of regions and localities

Many of our clients are economic development agencies and our work for them builds on our own experience in both the public and private sector - some might say as both poachers and gamekeepers!

policy and strategy
Our work helps public and private sector clients respond to and prepare for fundamental shifts in economic, social, technological, environmental and political circumstances. Whether you are formulating your strategy, or simply putting it together for public presentation, ask us how we can help.
appraisal, monitoring and evaluation
A consistent approach is needed from appraising a project before commitment, through monitoring it while it is underway to evaluating at milestones or after completion. Our previous projects in this area range from the Economic Impact of Angling in Scotland to an appraisal of Renewable Energy Projects in the Highlands and Islands to evaluations of EU funded local projects. We have also designed and implemented appraisal and monitoring systems.
social and demographic development
Development is of the people, by the people, and for the people. Our particular strength is in measuring social and demographic structures and trends and spotting the issues.
Click on the links below for an example of our work in this area:
Dumfries and Galloway Economic Audit 2004
Commuting Patterns in Forth Valley 2004
Adding Value in the South of Scotland 2004 Update
Moray 2020 Strategy 2005
Outline Masterplan for Buckie Harbour Regeneration 2006
Moray Social and Economic Audit and Atlas 2007
clusters and innovation
Our business began with identifying the role of industries in economic development. Click on

labour markets and skills
Our work in this area brings together three key components:
- analysis of competitiveness founded on productivity
- productivity founded on the skills of workers and their managers
- social inclusion founded on self-actualisation and participation in society
The matching process between demand for skills and supply is one of the key dynamics of innovation in a modern economy. It is our belief that efficient labour markets and useful skills initiatives require good information and solid analysis.

inward investment
Inward investment can be a crucial element in economic development. We specialise (often drawing on our cluster experience) in knowing what businesses would fit the economy and therefore benefit most themselves from re-locating. For inward investment agencies we have worked not just in picking targets and shaping the messages to them, but have also advised inward investment agencies on how to organize themselves to make the biggest contribution.
